“Set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity”. Paul isn’t telling Timothy to become a plaster saint – he’s telling him to live out his faith follow Jesus as his model. Jesus, whom the Pharisees accused of being “a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” Of course, they accused John the Baptist of having a demon, because he didn’t drink wine or eat the same kind of food as everyone else. You just can’t please some people!
